In my haste to set the table for lunch I clumsily knocked it over. I was so relieved that the glass didn't break that I didn't mind that I had to change the tablecloth. We shouldn't let things mean so much to us but I must admit that this vase filled with flowers brings a smile to my face everytime I see it. This is a photo that I took some time ago. Last year I carefully planted two cuttings of pipevine that a friend gave me with a promise that they would draw hordes of swallowtails. I didn't tell him that I would have planted them just for the foliage. I have altered this orignal photo so that it would look like a watercolor painting.

Will did warn me that when the swallowtails find the pipevine they will probably eat it "down to a nub." I was quietly dismayed. What a dilemma! On one hand I liked the foliage but on the other hand they are the favorite food of a butterfly that I want to attract to my garden.

Last year they limped through the summer heat even though I planted them in the shade of my batface plants and two dwarf bottlebrush bushes, among some pink caladiums.

This spring I was surprised that both cuttings had survived and a third one had sprouted though it was very small. Then while I was weeding I accidentally broke one of the larger vines off at the nub! Oh woe! But Will was right, it grew back. Meanwhile I tried to root the broken piece but it just would NOT root.

Now the vine is growing much more vigorously. I am reminded of some advice about perennials: The first year they sleep, the second year they creep and the third year they leap!

Swallowtail Butterflies

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_weFEeSbw-94/SE35UTJwsNI/AAAAAAAAALk/KgOB0Y91Cd8/s400/Swallowtail-15-8x10-WG-small.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5210094471071445202" />

I was so excited to see a half dozen pipevine swallowtail butterflies in my garden to day, the first I have seen in my garden. In fact they are so aggressive that I may rue the day that I planted them! This is a digital watercolor created from an original photo. During our trip to France last year we visited the Shakespeare & Company bookstore so that Henry could pose for a picture. I have converted this to a digital watercolor, then matted and framed it for his birthday, June 10. We will, however, be celebrating his birthday tomorrow with our weekly group of friends that meet every Thursday night even though his birthday isn't until next Tuesday. In fact it is the first public cemetery in Victoria, Texas. There are no grave markers here because most but not all of the burials here were moved to Evergreen Cemetery. Over the years the remaining markers have disappeared. German immigrants who died of cholera were buried here in a mass grave because there wasn't time to dig separate graves. In fact the graves were dug so shallow that at night the wolves would come to howl and feast on protruding noses, fingers and toes. A terrible time. Somehow the grist mill seems a fitting tribute to those buried here, though the exact location of the mass grave has been forgotten.

I have created this as a digital painting using the paint daubs filter. Please don't call it the gazebo. It was built in the late 1890s for summer concerts and it is still used for that purpose during special events, and for numerous weddings. Hurricane Claudette dropped an oak tree in the middle of it but it has been beautifully rebuilt, don't you think? At one time the bandstand was located across from the Victoria County Courthouse and then on the southeast corner near where the Coppini statue now stands, and then finally in the center of the plaza when the city's stand pipe (water tower) was removed.

When the Band Stand was rebuilt it was anchored into the underground foundation that one supported the stand pipe, so it is solidly anchored. Noyes statue by Pompeo Coppini at Ballinger. My dear husband, Henry, grew up at nearby Dry Ridge and attended high school at Ballinger so he was familiar with Coppini before coming to Victoria in 1963 and seeing "The Last Stand" in De Leon Plaza. Horses are difficult to draw well and I think they must also be very difficult to sculpt. This is done so well and I love the easy grace of the young man as well. The sculpture was commissioned by the family in honor of their son who was killed when he was thrown from a horse, but here there is no "demonization" of the horse, but rather the comfortable relationship their son had with his horse.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://lindawolff.blogspot.com/2008/05/charles-h-noyes-by-pompeo-coppini-at.html' title='Charles H. When expressing his own attitudes toward art and sculpture, he often criticized modernism, which he attributed to a general lack of screening of pupils in art schools. He thought that art training should be a regular branch of learning in a university, with strict standards that would assure adherence to classic and academic artistic traditions. He emphasized the importance of individual instruction from experienced artists. From 1943 to 1945 he was head of the art department of Trinity University in San Antonio. In 1945 he and Tauch cofounded the Classic Arts Fraternity in San Antonio (renamed Coppini Academy of Fine Arts in 1950).
Coppini died in San Antonio on September 26, 1957, and was buried in Sunset Memorial Park in a crypt of his own design. He was survived by his wife and his foster daughter. The San Antonio studio now serves as a museum of Coppini and Tauch's work.

BIBLIOGRAPHY: Pompeo Coppini,
From Dawn to Sunset (San Antonio: Naylor, 1949). Three years later he moved to New York City to facilitate the production of the Littlefield Fountain Memorial. He was assisted on this and other major projects by sculptor Waldine Tauch, who began studying with Coppini in 1910 and continued to work with him as his colleague and foster daughter until his death. In 1937 Coppini established a studio at 115 Melrose Place in San Antonio in order to work on a major commission for the Texas Centennial, the cenotaph to the heroes of the Alamo (1937-39) on Alamo Plaza in San Antonio. Other Centennial commissions awarded to Coppini were the commemorative half-dollar (1934) and the Hall of Stateqv bronze statues of Stephen F. Austin, Thomas J. Rusk, William B. Travis, James W. Fannin, Mirabeau B. Lamar, qqv and Sam Houston (1935-36). Coppini's contributions to the state were recognized in 1941, when he was awarded an honorary doctor of fine arts degree by Baylor University. Recognition and appreciation of his work extended to Italy, for in 1931 he was decorated "Commendatore" of the Crown of Italy for his contribution to art in America.

The Last Stand - Sculpture by Coppini

A full figure view of "The Last Stand" by P. Coppini in De Leon Plaza of Victoria, Texas was recently cleaned and I was impressed by how much better it looked. I don't recall seeing before how strong is the face in this sculpture. It is dedicated to those who served in the Confederate States of America.

Here is some more information on Coppini from the Handbook of Texas Online:

COPPINI, POMPEO LUIGI (1870-1957). Pompeo Coppini, sculptor, was born in Moglia, Mantua, Italy, on May 19, 1870, the son of Giovanni and Leandra (Raffa) Coppini. He grew up in Florence, where he was a student at the Accademia di Belle Arte and there studied under Augusto Rivalta.
He graduated with highest honors in 1889. On March 5, 1896, Coppini immigrated to the United States with very little money and no knowledge of English. On February 27, 1898, he married Elizabeth di Barbieri of New Haven, Connecticut; he became an American citizen in 1902.
Coppini, hearing of Frank Teich's search for a sculptor, moved to Texas in November 1901. He was commissioned to model the statue of Jefferson Davis and other figures for the Confederate monument (1901-03) subsequently erected on the Capitol grounds in Austin.
Other Texas commissions followed, one of the best known being the Littlefield Fountain Memorial (1920-28) at the University of Texas at Austin. He also did the seven bronze statues along the south mall of the university grounds, all of which were associated with the Littlefield commission except the sculpture of George Washington (completed 1955).

Hugging Anaqua

When we have out of town guests we love to show them this tree in Old Victoria. Anaquas trees begin with multiple trunks separated at ground level but as each of the trunks grow larger they merge and have a corded appearance. Also, the branches are likely to angle off in strange ways for no apparent reason. In this example, it looks like two trees hugging each other, hence their name, "The Hugging Anaquas."

They were also called Knock-Away trees by pioneers who apparently couldn't quite remember the botanical name, and as sandpaper tree because the leaves are rough and grainy like sand paper. But sometimes, it's just too much. Scale is an important consideration in any room.

Here's an alternative using smaller art: Buy several smaller pieces of art for the same space, 8x10's up to 16x20's. You can rotate in new pieces to keep the display lively and entertaining. Nine vertical photographs, all the same size and orientation, can be arranged like a nine-patch quilt, that is, three rows of three. Or two rows of three if the space to be filled is more horizontal.

Or mix it up with a variety of sizes and orientations. Unify your display of collections by using identical or similar frames. They could all be front mount, gallery wrap, white, or gold.

You might even develop seasonal displays, a Christmas display followed by a display of area historic sites and then a display of spring wildflowers. If the replacement art is the same size and orientation (vertical or horizontal) you can even use the same hangers.

I wanted to line these up horizontally but can't make it work. You can easily cut a custom paper mat to adjust the image size for an 8x10 frame for a grander presentation. If the center opening is 4x6, it will give you a 2-inch mat border all the way round. The cards are 4.5 x 6.3".

Hobby Lobby and Scrapbooking Shops offer a wide variety of papers than can be used for a paper mat. Often an 8x10 frame can be purchased on sale for less than $5.

So a greeting card and a frame can be purchased for yourself, or a dear friend for less than $10. How cool is that? Of course, you could also just send the art card so that your recipient can choose their own frame and matting.

Old Cotton Gin Near Shelby

This is a digital watercolor of an old cotton gin near Shelby. In the foreground is Mexican Sage which looks almost velvety. In the background is a Mistflower of some sort. It's not Eupatorium colestinum because the leaves are not trianglur shaped. I have that variety at the other end of my garden and it is not blooming yet. Nor do I think that it is E. odoratum because the leaves are linear or deeply lobed rather than lanceolate. To keep it contained I am not shy about hacking 10-foot lengths from it that I add to my compost bins. It even pops up out in the lawn but there it can be easily controlled by mowing. The name Passion here applies to the padres who used it to describe the Passion of Chirst (Crown of Thorns, etc.) not romantic love. This would be a great companion for "A Morning Sip of Dew" that I posted yesterday. The two 8x10s could be displayed side by side, or one over the other. I think this one would look especially nice on stretched canvas.

Texas Digital Watercolors

I love all things Texas and "Texan" but especially its history and culture, native flora and fauna.

In this blog I will feature my digital watercolors that begin as a photograph but are transformed into digital watercolors. They are available through http://lindawolff.imagekind.com/

Through image.kind.com you can select whether to have it printed on a variety of papers --with or without a mat -- and then select among a broad variety of frames. The cost is instantly calculated as you make your selections so you keep your purchase within your budget.

You can also choose to have it printed on canvas with either museum wrap or gallery wrap. With museum wrap the image is stretched onto a wooden frame, and the sides are white. If you select gallery wrap the image is wrapped around the wooden frame so that the image continues onto the side and the canvas is neatly stapled to the back.

It seems fitting to launch this series with "Bluebonnets at Goliad" which was photographed near the Fannin Monument. Did you know that more men died at Goliad fighting for Texas independence than at the Alamo at San Antonio?
